BIOGRAPHY

PHOENIX, AZ - Mike McLeod was first recognized as a photographer for the arresting portraits of Casual Encounters and unsettling interiors of Texas Porno Road Trip. Both became cult classics noted for their experimental approach to book design. After the 2017 passing of close friend Shannon Michael Cane, McLeod withdrew from the public eye to pursue advanced study in yoga and Indian spiritual philosophies.

In the years since, an expanded practice has been emerging - one informed by conceptual art and vernacular signage. McLeod employs the materials and techniques of a traditional sign-painter but with the sensibility of a linguist, surrealist - even a mystic. The result: a collapse of meaning and its inevitable reconstruction.

Before attending university, McLeod worked as a graphic designer for RollingStone.com and a media producer for Playboy.com. His work has been exhibited internationally and covered by Der Greif and Aperture as well as published in numerous anthologies including 10x10 American Photobooks, Unlocked and Printed Matter's Queer Zines Vol. 2.

McLeod is a 2013 recipient of the Phoenix Art Museum Contemporary Forum Emerging Artist Grant.
